Dead Snow - Zombie Nazis!

Dead Snow

The best low budget, classic zombie flick to come out of Norway

Year: 2009
Director: Tommy Wirkola

Overall Rating: 5 stars

What could be better than a classic zombie flick with a modest budget?  Well, apparently the Norwegians know the answer...  Nazi Zombies!!!  You already know the story, and there aren't any real surprises, but does it really matter when it just feels right?

A few friends plan on taking a nice little vacation in the middle of nowhere and start telling stories about Nazi gold hidden in the area.  Unfortunately for them (and good for us) they find some of it and the fun begins.

As with any good zombie flick, they start slow.  Taking out stragglers quickly and quietly before letting there presence be known to the rest of the group.  Once they really get going, it doesn't take long before there are only a couple of kids left (and a whole bunch of zombies).  But with pic-axe and chainsaw they attempt to make it the several miles back to the vehicles.   What follows is a fun romp through the forest and zombie heads sure do fly.

The music selections are pretty good as well, although I must admit to laughing out loud at a couple points just due to the almost cliche musical score.

What truly surprised me was that despite the low budget of around $2 mil (over $600k in effects alone) and the cheesy premise, the acting was actually pretty good.  Of course it's not really that hard to play a dead man...

For us, it was Shaun of the Dead all over again.  We were looking for a crappy comedy zombie flick but ended up with something truly enjoyable.  This one is highly recommended if you're a lover of everything zombie.

  1. No, I said that just like Shaun, we were expecting crap but got something much better. :) Shaun has a more original story and just enough comedy to make you laugh while Dead Snow follows the zombie recipe to the letter but somehow still manages to make it work.
