The Happening - When is Something Going to Happen?

The Happening

the twist is that someone let him make another movie.

Year: 2008
Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Overall Rating: 1.5 stars

Bad writing, bad premise, bad acting, and a pretty crappy ending...  What more could you want from yet another Shyamalan creation?  Apparently the only thing you need to have a film do well is have a name everybody knows.  Even having actors I actually LIKE isn't enough to save this PoS.

It starts out promising enough.  Masses of people are dying!  Too bad this is the high point of the film.  From there you're left following 3 people as they attempt to leave the city, and I guess just try to survive.

They get to the country and figure out that any time large numbers of people get together they're as good as dead, the only problem is that as more people die, the size of groups needed to cause death gets smaller as well. This leads to the only "action" sequences in the film as nobody wants any unexpected visitors.  Unfortunately  that's about it.  Then the wind blows and more people die.  Add the "the end...  Or is it?" ending and you've got the perfect recipe for a waste of 91 minutes.

The acting doesn't help much either.  Although I know the stars can do a much better job, it's obvious their hearts aren't in it this time.  Half the time it appears that they couldn't figure out the point either.  An unbelievable environmental message underneath Mr. Shyamalan's crappy writing has got to make it difficult.
